Frequently Asked Questions

What is Behavioral Health Integration (BHI)?

Behavioral Health Integration is a care-management model where primary care practices provide ongoing support for patients with behavioral or mental health conditions. It includes monthly check-ins, symptom tracking, care-plan updates, and coordination between the primary care provider, care manager, and behavioral health specialist.

How often can BHI be billed?

BHI can be billed once per calendar month when the required elements are completed, including at least 20 minutes of clinical staff time and a documented care plan.

Does BHI require a psychiatric consultant?

A psychiatric consultant is recommended but not required for the 99484 general BHI code. Collaborative Care (CoCM) codes 99492–99494, however, do require psychiatric review each month.
